Bootstrap Marketing Tip No.48

Today’s message, bootstrappers, is to be nice to people who are nice to you.  Does that have a place in online business?  Well, yes it does.  For example, when you find a blog has said something nice about you, perhaps posted a link, get right in there and stumble, digg and twitter them.  Use all the social media to give them the recognition you think they deserve.  Boost their visitor numbers and that will in turn boost yours.

Of course, you can start the love-fest by saying nice things about them first.  The secret is to know the people who will make good friends, and that has nothing to do with how nice the people themselves are.  Some of the leading lights of many market sectors are great people who will willingly help others.  The problem is the big boys an girls won’t notice you amongst their many other true admirers and occasional sycophants.

Look for people whose work you admire and who are a little way ahead of you in your sector.  They are more likely to value your support and take the time to return the compliment.

Bootstrap Marketing Tip No.35

You must optimize your pages and monitor their perfomance, and who better than Google to tell you how to do it?  Google’s SEO Starter Guide is, not surprisingly,  a good starting point – and it’s now available in 40 languages.  Even if you are not new to optimization, you can use it as a checklist.  Google also promise to update it from time to time, so it may be an idea to check it occasionally to see if any advice has changed. Then go to  Google Webmaster Central for links to more information, including their video blog, which answers FAQs, and the Help Forum.

Once you are happy with your SEO and can reasonably expect good traffic to your site it’s time to check how different pages are performing.  Google’s Site Optimiser will show you which pages and layouts are performing best, and Google Analytics will track your visitors.

Bootstrap Marketing Tip No.22

Add This is a neat little widget that allows your visitors to quickly store and share the link to your site.  By installing a single button like this –

Bookmark and Share

– you give them direct access to Twitter, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Bebo, Facebook, Digg, Reddit and about forty others (at the last count).  It’s completely free, and you don’t even have to register unless you want their analytics package.  Add This works with the most used blogging software: Blogger, WordPress and Typepad, or on any website, and there is also an email option.  It takes just a couple of minutes to set up, then simply copy/paste the html code where you want it.  Get your button from AddThis, then paste it next to your page content, like this:

Bootstrap Marketing Tip No.21

StumbleUpon remains a fantastic web tool and great resource for the bootstrap marketer.  If you’ve not yet used it, do – get the StumbleUpon toolbar now.  When you hit the ‘Stumble’ button, StumbleUpon brings up a randomly selected website, based on your stated interests.  The selection is actually based on the rating given by other users with a similar set of interests.  Read it, rate or favourite it or send it to friends if you want too, hit ‘Stumble’ and away you go again.  It’s great for research, gleening ideas for blogs, etc, and most importantly for driving traffic to your site.  And it’s fun – not a combination you get often!  How to use StumbleUpon.  And some more great StumbleUpon ideas.
