Bootstrap Marketing Tip No.38

Today’s bootstrap marketing tip is, ‘stay up to date‘.  WebProNews is running a fascinating interview with Rand Fishkin, CEO of  SEO Moz.  Some of his conclusions, based on research by SEO Moz, may surprise you!  Firstly, but unsurprisingly, the title tag remains vital, as do the number of links to your page.  Importantly, Rand confirms that total links is less important than the number of domains that link to you.  Important too is relevant anchor text (jargon buster) for inbound links.  Social media, he says, are good for creating a buzz and for getting traffic, but he sees no evidence social links affect SEO significantly.  And now for the surprises.  Keywords in H1 tags and overall keyword density are not important factors in ranking!  Don’t forget about them, but don’t rely on them either seems to be the message.  W3C validation too is not necessarily linked to good ranking (something I have long believed but lacked the means to prove conclusively).  Providing your site looks good and performs well, it’s probably not worth the effort to get the code spotless.  And finally Rand stresses the importance of users of your site and users of your linking sites happy – give them a reason to link to you.
